Why the Kandyan saree is still the bridal favourite
The Kandyan saree, or Osariya, is the most recognisable Sri Lankan bridal look. Its frilled waist, fitted jacket and shoulder drape carry the history of the Kandyan kingdom into the modern Poruwa ceremony. For many brides it is the one outfit that has to feel both traditional and personal. You can read more about its history in our guide to the origins of the Kandyan saree.
Because a Kandyan bridal saree is heavily embellished and worn for only a few hours, renting is a practical choice. You get a professionally finished saree with beading, sequins or embroidery at a fraction of the cost of buying one.
Kandyan bridal styles you can rent
Our rental collection covers the full range of Kandyan bridal looks. These are some of the styles brides choose most often:
Classic off-white and ivory with gold
Off-white or ivory sarees with gold borders, gold motifs or geometric gold embroidery. This is the timeless Kandyan bridal look and pairs well with traditional Kandyan jewellery.
Modern Kandyan with statement sleeves
Puff sleeves, sheer sleeves, striped sheer sleeves, organza sleeves, ruffles and traditional beeralu lace sleeves. Sleeves change the whole silhouette, so it is worth trying a few at your fitting.
Lace, pearls and sequins
Lace jackets, pearl drapes, pearl headpieces and all-over sequins in white, silver and champagne. These look soft and elegant in photographs and suit evening receptions.
Peplum jackets and long tails
A peplum jacket gives a modern, structured waist, while a long tail adds drama as you walk to the Poruwa. Both work well for brides who want a contemporary take on the Kandyan drape.

The jacket fit makes or breaks a Kandyan saree
A Kandyan bridal jacket is structured and close-fitting, so even a rented saree has to be adjusted to your body. At Lassana Saree, every rental includes adjustments to your measurements. During your fitting we check the jacket fit, the saree length, the pleats and how comfortable it feels when you sit, stand and walk.
This matters more than most brides expect. You will wear the saree for many hours, through the Poruwa ceremony, photographs and the reception. A jacket that is too tight or a hem that is too long will show in every photo. Bring the exact shoes you plan to wear so we can set the length correctly. Want a jacket made new for you? Kandyan bridal saree rent prices
The price of a Kandyan bridal saree depends on the design, how much handwork is on the saree and jacket, and whether the saree is brand new. At Lassana Saree:
- Kandyan bridal saree rental starts from Rs. 25,000.
- First Rent, a brand-new saree designed and stitched to your measurements, starts from Rs. 65,000. See our First Rent page.
- Made-to-order sarees that you keep start from Rs. 120,000, or from Rs. 35,000 for tailoring when you supply all the fabric and materials. See custom bridal sarees.
The exact price depends on the saree you choose. Send us a photo of a design you like on WhatsApp and we will tell you its rental price.
Not sure which option fits your budget? Book a free fitting first. You can try rental sarees and talk through First Rent and made-to-order options at the same visit, then decide without any pressure. The fitting and consultation are free.
How to choose your Kandyan bridal saree
- Start with your venue and time. A grand hotel ballroom suits richer beading and sequins, while a daytime garden or temple setting often suits a lighter, minimal look.
- Decide traditional or modern. Classic off-white with gold, or modern sleeves, lace and pearls. Bring reference photos so we understand your taste.
- Try different sleeves and jackets. Puff, sheer and peplum styles flatter different body shapes. Our team will guide you on what suits you.
- Match jewellery, bouquet and shoes. You can match these during your fitting so the whole look is balanced.
- Plan your homecoming look. If you need a second saree for the homecoming or going-away, choose it at the same visit.
Completing your Kandyan bridal look
A Kandyan bride is judged on the whole look, not only the saree. At your fitting you can match bridal jewellery, a bouquet and shoes to the saree you choose, so the colours, metal tones and proportions work together. We also offer matching bridal shoes and bouquets to complete your look.
Most brides also need a second outfit. A homecoming saree is usually more colourful and lighter than the bridal saree, and a going-away saree is often simpler still. We make both as First Rent homecoming sarees (from Rs. 35,000), and choosing them at the same visit makes it easier to keep the jewellery and colour palette consistent across all your wedding photos.
What to bring to your fitting
- Your shoes, or a pair of the same heel height, so we can set the saree length correctly.
- Reference photos of Kandyan looks you like from Pinterest, Instagram or past weddings.
- Your colour plan for the wedding, including flowers and bridesmaid colours if you have them.
- Your jewellery, if you already have it, to check how it sits with the jacket neckline.
- One or two people whose opinion you trust. Fittings are calmer and quicker with a small group.

Getting married from abroad?
You do not have to be in Sri Lanka to start. Brides living in the UK have worked with us through video calls and online measurements, and their Kandyan sarees fitted on the first fit-on. Message us on WhatsApp with your wedding date and we will explain the steps and timeline.
Even though she was in the UK, the communication was smooth and they were very supportive throughout the process. Even though the measurements were taken online, the Kandyan fit her perfectly on the first fit-on.
